The Best New People: vocational internship

When I first started my internship at Dixon Appointments, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. Coming from a psychology background, I knew I was interested in people and workplace culture, but I had no experience in a professional office setting. From the very first day, the warmth and encouragement of the team quickly put me at ease. Ange and Sue played such an important role in shaping my experience. Their patience, generosity, and willingness to answer every question (no matter how small) made all the difference. They created a learning environment where I felt supported, trusted, and empowered to take on new responsibilities with confidence.

The culture at Dixon is something truly special. It is collaborative, caring, and people-focused, with a genuine balance of professionalism and warmth. Team catch ups, and the little moments of encouragement made me feel like a valued member of the team. What stood out most to me was how Dixon’s commitment to clients and candidates mirrors the supportive way they treat each other internally. That consistency in care and professionalism is inspiring, and it’s something I hope to carry forward in my own career.

Over the course of my internship, I developed a wide range of skills, from administration and compliance to professional communication, data management, and even observing recruitment processes firsthand. More importantly, I learned how these tasks fit into the bigger picture of creating positive experiences for both clients and candidates. These skills and insights will be invaluable as I pursue a career in HR, where both technical ability and interpersonal understanding are so essential.

I am extremely grateful to Ange, Sue, and the whole Dixon team for welcoming me so openly and investing in my growth. This internship has given me not only practical skills and confidence but also a clearer vision of the kind of workplace culture I want to be part of and contribute to in the future.
