In today’s market it is unlikely that you will find a candidate that exactly matches the full range of experiences, skills and competencies that you are seeking. Some employers may be eliminating potential candidates that have the key skills set and if given the suitable amount of training, could provide a large return on investment to the organisation. In recognising potential transferable skills a candidate might have, you open up the possibilities for your organisation.
Position Description
A well defined Position Description will allow you to easily compare potential candidates’ skills to the essential elements of the role. Ensure your Position Description is current and the required skills are realistic.
Interviewing and decision making
Overly lengthy recruitment processes make it more difficult for an employer to retain candidates they have interviewed in the recruitment process. Some suggest that once an employer receives a CV, the candidate is available for ‘less than 72 hours’.
If you meet a candidate that you feel is suited for a vacancy, be prepared to make a decision. Have senior managers or key staff available to meet with candidates at short notice. You won’t be the only organisation interested in a top candidate.
Salary packaging and non monetary benefits
Make yourself aware of current salaries and benefits to remain competitive. Instead of attempting to match salaries internally, smart employers are matching their salaries to what the market dictates. Employers are also increasingly looking at what non monetary benefits they can offer to attract potential candidates. According to various recruitment surveys, salary may only be 50% of the driving factor in what candidates look for in a new job.
